Most of us have seen television commercials demonstrating the effects of Miracle-Gro on plants, but few know it has other uses. One of these is during the pit firing of pottery. Potters often include additives, such as Miracle-Gro, that will alter the color of the finished pottery.

  1. What Is Miracle-Gro?

    • Miracle-Gro is a crystallized plant food in that contains many vital plant nutrients. It also contains copper carbonate, a green copper compound.

    • Miracle-Gro can be added directly to the kiln's fuel. When the kiln is lit, the Miracle-Gro burns in the fire. It can also be sprinkled directly on the pottery,

    • Miracle-Gro plant food contains copper and other metallic compounds. Though copper compounds are usually green, burning copper carbonate produces chemical byproducts that give blue and purple shades on the finished pieces.
