New York State Guidance Counselor Certification

Guidance counselors work closely with teachers to ensure a child's academic success. However, counselors fall under different certification requirements than the teachers they work alongside. If you're applying for certification in this area, here's what you'll need to know.

  1. Basics

    • New York guidance counselors are expected to earn permanent certification in their field (unlike teachers, who must periodically renew their credentials). A certified school counselor may work with students in prekindergarten to grade 12.

    Education and Experience

    • Students who complete approved counseling programs in New York receive a master's degree or advanced certificate in their field (or both). Certification applicants can begin the credentialing process while still in their program of study but cannot get permanently certified until their master's program is done and they have had two years' work experience.

    Provisional Certification

    • While completing the masters, candidates may earn a provisional certificate. For most applicants, that means having at least 30 credit hours of graduate work, a supervised internship experience and background check. Other requirements may apply. The provisional certificate expires in five years.

    Application Process

    • Candidates may have their college apply for them through the New York State Education Department or file as individuals. If filing individually, they may do so electronically using the TEACH web application system at www.nysed.gov. As of August, 2010, the application fee is $100.
