About Firefighter Tax Deductions

About Firefighter Tax Deductions thumbnail
The cost of a firefighter's uniform is one of many work-related tax deductions.

Tax deductions are all around us, yet overlooked deductions are some of the most common and costliest mistakes on tax returns. Many deductions are work-related. Firefighters may be surprised to discover what qualifies as a deduction.

  1. Uniforms

    • To qualify as a deduction, a work uniform must not be suitable for street wear. A firefighter's protective gear qualifies for this deduction.

The cost of uniforms that are reimbursed by employers is not deductible.

    Union Dues

    • Firefighters, like many other workers, have the option to join workers' unions. Members are generally required to pay annual dues to these unions. Paid dues that have not been reimbursed by the employer are tax-deductible.

    Professional Publications

    • It is not uncommon for workers to keep up to date with trends and news in firefighting by subscribing to certain trade publications. Subscription fees to these publications are tax-deductible. However, publications not related to the firefighting trade---for example, magazines that firefighters might leisurely read while waiting for a call---are not deductible.
