Most face masks loosely cover the nose and mouth. They are sold as either surgical, dental, medical procedure, isolation or laser masks, depending on where they are intended for use. There are several designs; some tie or fit around the head with an elastic band and some have loops that fit around the ears. Not all face masks are equally effective. Only four face masks are FDA-approved for flu prevention---all of which are N95 respirators. These masks fit tightly to the face and are designed to filter out smaller particles.

The flu can spread through the nose or mouth; a face mask keeps both areas covered and prevents the wearer from touching them, lessening the risk of transmission. Regular face masks protect against the spread of large airborne particles to which viruses are often attached. Respirators are most effective at filtering out these particles from the air you breathe.

While a face mask can help aid in flu prevention, it works best when combined with other methods. Wash your hands thoroughly and regularly, avoid close contact with sick people and stay away from others when you are sick. Always cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing. Face masks are disposable and should be thrown away after the first use.
