Special Behavior in a Golden Eagle

Golden eagles have wingpans of nearly 7 feet.

Golden eagles get their name from the golden-brown plumage on their heads. These majestic birds of prey live in North America, Asia, Europe and northern Africa, and can live 38 years in the wild, according to the San Diego Zoo.

Hunting Methods

Golden eagles have territories of up to 60 square miles, according to National Geographic. They often hunt in pairs, soaring at high altitudes and searching the landscape below for fish, small birds and mammals like rabbits and squirrels.On occasion, they capture foxes, deer or antelope. Once a golden eagle spots prey, it dives at up to 150 miles per hour, latching onto an animal with its powerful talons.

Mating and Breeding

Golden eagles select one mate and pairs may remain together for life, according to the San Diego Zoo. Mating golden eagles engage in spectacular aerial displays. They build nests of branches and grass in high places like treetops, cliffs and telephone poles. Female eagles usually lay up to four eggs, but typically just one or two fledglings survive, according to National Geographic.

Vision

Like an owl, golden eagles can turn their heads about 270 degrees. They see in color and have excellent daytime vision, but their night vision is about the same as humans.
