Damaged Hair Care for the Black Woman

Damaged Hair Care for the Black Woman thumbnail
African -American hair that is damaged must undergo special care.

Some black women experience severe hair damage due to chemical relaxers and thermal styling, but there are special ways to rejuvenate hair back to its healthy state through special hair care. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Silk or Satin Scarf

    • Although many African-American women are not aware of the damages of cotton, contact with cotton depletes African-American hair of essential oils. Use satin pillows and bed sheets in addition to securing hair with a satin or silk scarf before bed.

    Co-Washing

    • Co-washing, also known as conditioning washing, is a method used to infuse moisture in the hair shaft that is otherwise lost during shampooing. Shampooing strips African-American hair of essential oils. Instead of shampooing hair with traditional shampoos, shampoo hair with conditioner. This method will seal in and add moisture to damaged hair.

    Deep Condition

    • Using a deep-conditioning treatment like hot oil treatments or intensive moisture conditioners at least once a week rejuvenates damaged and frizzy African-American hair.

    Reduce Heat

    • Along with relaxing hair, chemicals, curling irons, blow dryers and flat irons remove oils and moisture from hair that is already damaged. If you must use heat products, use steam rollers for curls. Steam uses moisture instead of dry heat to curl locks. Also, instead of blow drying, opt to let hair air-dry.
