True Facts About Moissanite

True Facts About Moissanite thumbnail
Bring sparkle into your life for less with Moissanite.

Moissanite is the registered brand name for a man-made silicon carbide gemstone produced by Charles & Colvard. Gem-quality Moissanite sparkles more brilliantly than a diamond and is more durable than a ruby, sapphire or emerald, according to the website What is Moissanite.com. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Not a Diamond

    • Moissanite is not a diamond. A diamond is made of carbon and Moissanite is composed of silicon carbide. However, thermal diamond-testing equipment manufactured prior to the introduction of Moissanite can incorrectly identify a Moissanite gem as a diamond. To remedy this situation, Charles & Colvard designed a tester that examines the physical properties of the gemstone and accurately identifies it as either Moissanite or a diamond. Today, jewelers use the new tester to identify gemstones.

    Care

    • As with any fine jewel, handle Moissanite carefully. Remove Moissanite jewelry before rough or strenuous activities. Use an ultrasonic cleaner or commercial jewelry cleaner to remove dirt and smudges from Moissanite jewelry.

    Cost

    • Moissanite generally costs one-tenth the amount of a diamond. The price of Moissanite jewelry is also dependent upon the cost of the setting.
