RSS Protocol
RSS protocol is the use of standardized XML file formats and parsing technology to provide aggregated content such as news articles, search engine results or message threads to other websites or personal computers. This form of data is known as "syndication." The three main types are RSS 2.0, RSS 1.0 and Atom.

"Really Simple Syndication," supported by the RSS Advisory Board and Harvard Law, is the simplest and the most commonly used. Its tags, such as "<description>," "<item>" and "<pubDate>" tend to be simple, with minimal use of qualifiers, while providing full extensibility through the use of XML namespace.
RSS 1.0

"RDF site summary," also sometimes known as "rich site summary," shares a common ancestry with RSS 2.0 in version 0.91. Therefore, it has familiar tag names such as "<description>" and "<item>." But it also incorporates RDF, or resource description framework, tags such as "<rdf:RDF>" and RDF qualifiers such as "<item rdf:about="http://">," making it fully supportable within the semantic web as proposed by W3C, the international body of leading organizations committed to developing the Internet. It also has official extended modules through the use of XML namespace, with tags prefixed by "dc:" for Dublin core for more specialist metadata support for data resources, "sy:" for specialist syndication support such as aggregators in search engines and portals and "co:" for extended web content support.

Atom

Atom is a more recent RSS protocol, designed from the ground upwards in the light of more recent Internet developments such as blogging and from lessons learned from RSS 2.0 and 1.0. It is not yet as commonly used or widely extended as the other protocols. It uses different tag names such as "<icon>" instead of "<image>," "<entry>" instead of "<item>" and "<summary>" instead of "<description>." It has the advantage that it is supported by the IEFT, or Internet Engineering Task Force, which is a broad-based Internet standards body.
