Hair Perm Information

Hair Perm Information thumbnail
Perms restructure the look of your hair into curls, waves or straightness.

A German hairdresser invented perms roughly 100 years ago. Perms can straighten curly hair or add variety, curls and volume to limp hair. The word "perm" is actually short for "permanent wave". During the process of receiving a perm, a chemical restructures the hair into curls, waves or straightness. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Time Frame

    • Perms times vary from person to person because of the length of your hair and the quickness of your stylist. They usually take 1 to 2 hours to complete. A perm takes 28 hours to settle, so it won't look its best until it is done settling.

    Longevity

    • A perm usually lasts from 3 to 5 months. After 3 to 5 months, you must re-perm your roots so they match the rest of your hair. In 6 to 8 weeks, new hair growth can change the shape and look of your perm. Watch for changes in growing hair and to re-perm your hair when necessary.

    Perm Care

    • Do not wash your hair for 48 hours after your perm. When blow drying your hair, use a low heat setting, as high heat settings dry out your perm and cause frizz. When styling your hair, use a vent brush and other products to help perms keep their original shape and attractiveness.
