Knowing the PMP exam format can help with studying.

The Project Management Institute offers the Project Management Professional certification (PMP). A project manager earns a PMP by taking and passing the PMP exam, after meeting certain prerequisites.

  1. Topics Covered

    • The PMP exam consists of 200 questions broken into six sections of knowledge. According to percentages listed within the Project Management Institute's PMP Credential Handbook, the exam contains 22 questions on the initiation phase of a project, 46 questions on planning, 54 questions on execution, 41 questions on monitoring and controlling, 18 questions on closing, and 18 questions on professional and social responsibility.

    Time Frame

    • The Project Management Institute gives each project manager four hours to complete the exam. The project manger may also take an optional tutorial and survey, which the PMI estimates will take about 15 minutes to complete.

    Test Media

    • PMI administers the PMP exam in either a computer-based or a paper-based format. Computer-based testing is the standard; PMI only offers paper-based testing in specific situations where the project manager cannot take the test at a center that offers computer-based testing.
