Does a Barber Need a License?
Barbering is a trusted position and requires extensive training. A barber can be responsible for many subjects under the job heading, in addition to cutting hair. Many barbers shave, and use color, dyes and chemicals which must be learned correctly.

Licensing
-
All states require that barbers have a license, although the minimum requirements do vary from state to state. The minimum age is usually seventeen or older, and there are strict guidelines and examination requirements for obtaining a license.
Training
-
All barbers must attend an official barber college. Enrollment is based on a fee which will vary from school to school, but the average is around $5,000. Full training is provided, and hopeful barbers must attend all classes, complete all assignments and pass a final examination. Your license will be mailed to you upon passing.

Experience Required
-
Experience must be no less than 1,500 hours within a classroom and training environment. Examinations are state-administered and non-refundable. If you fail the examination, you must be prepared to pay a further fee to retake it. Once you receive your license, it must be renewed every two years.
