Work Zone Safety

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 3.7 million cases of nonfatal injuries in the workplace in 2008. Different work environments breed their own set of safety hazards. As such, knowing the types of safety hazards that pervade your work zone can save your life.

  1. About

    • Unsafe work zones are areas that are in poor condition, such as bad housekeeping and unfinished walking surfaces, or have unsafe equipment and machinery. An unsafe work zone also can relate to an area that is contaminated by toxic gases or substances, or even contagious illnesses.

    Features

    • Making a work zone safe entails placing guards on dangerous machinery, giving employees personal protective equipment and ensuring that hazards are addressed and eliminated. Hazards can be prevented in work zones by having reporting procedures in place. Workers who identify safety risks in their work areas should report them to their supervisors.

    Considerations

    • The North Carolina Department of Transportation says their work zone safety program aims to lower the number of injuries by educating and training employees and the community. By enhancing safety awareness, the NCDOT says they can maintain safer work environments, and they do so through a series of initiatives, campaigns and educational modules.
