Vehicle registration, or license plates, are metal or plastic plates attached to a motorized vehicle or trailer to identify the vehicle. Most registration plates are identified by a combination of letters and numbers.

Vehicle registration plates can be called different things, depending on the jurisdiction. Other common terms include license plates, registration plates, number plate or a tag. Most jurisdictions require plates attached to the front and rear of the vehicle.
History

The United States began requiring registration plates for vehicles when New York introduced the concept in 1901. Vehicle owners were first required to create their own plates, until state governments began issuing plates in 1903.

In the United States, each state and the District of Columbia issue their own registration plates. The designs and formats of each state's plate differs from all the rest. Generally, all states use letters and numbers on plates to identify vehicles. Many plates feature a state motto or saying that helps make that state's plate unique.
