What Is Dry Loop Phone Service? thumbnail
Dry loop DSL Internet service began to appear in 2004.

Recognizing the need to remain competitive, telecommunications companies started have unbundled DSL service from their telephone services in 2004, according to Punny.org. The resulting product--called dry loop phone service--results in a cost savings for people who do not use the phone services.

  1. What Is It?

    • Dry loop phone service uses a phone line that provides a minimal connection to receive a DSL signal. The phone number associated with the line does not function for any other purpose and has no dial tone. You get high-speed Internet without having to buy bundled telephone services that you may not need.

    How it Works

    • With dry loop service, the phone lines run through a splitter called a POTS, which means "plain old telephone service," and splits the signal into data and voice lines. When you have dry loop phone service installed, you get only the data service.

    Who Uses it?

    • People who use VOIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, use dry loop phone services because VOIP places a phone call using the Internet, instead of through a typical telephone network.
