Honda Motor Information
In 1946, Soichiro Honda created the Honda Technical Research Institute in Hamamatsu, Japan, with the intent of producing motorcycle engines. More than six decades later, Honda Motor Company, Ltd., is an international business and one of the world's largest motorcycle and auto producers.

Early History

In 1948, Honda Motor Company, Ltd. incorporated in Japan. In 1959, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., was established in Los Angeles, California. Honda's first automobile, the N600, hit the market in 1970, but sales were not very good. Honda's fortunes reversed when the company introduced the Honda Civic hatchback in 1973.

The American Honda Motor Co. employed just six employees when it first started business in the U.S. In 1979, the company opened its first American motorcycle factory, becoming the first Japanese auto maker to manufacture its product in the U.S. In 1982, the auto maker opened its first American car plant, becoming the first Japanese auto maker to manufacture cars in the U.S. As of 2010, Honda employs more than 25,000 American workers and more than 100,000 worldwide.

In 2010, Honda Motor Company, Ltd. was the third-largest automaker in Japan, but the top motorcycle producer in the world. Honda Motor's top market is the U.S., where auto sales account for more than 90 percent of the company's revenue. Honda Motor also produces all-terrain vehicles, power generators, outboard motors, and industrial and agricultural machinery.
