Cookie files and other offline files can offer an opportunity for identity theft or a means for a virus to attack a computer. There are a number of options available to maintain the safety and security of a computer.

  1. Deleting Cookies

    • Most internet browsers such as Internet Explorer and Firefox, allow you to manually delete cookie files along with web browsing history. This feature is typically found under the "Tools" menu. Click on "Options", the "Browsing History' in Internet Explorer and "Privacy" in Firefox.

    Anti-virus Software

    • There are a number of software applications designed specifically for ridding a computer of viruses. Many of these applications can be purchased and downloaded online. TechSupportAlert.com lists a number of anti-virus programs that are free. They include Microsoft Security Essentials, Avast! Free Antivirus, and Avira AntiVir Personal Edition.

    Programs

    • There are programs such as Window Washer by Webroot Software, Free Security Manager 1.0.0 and Spyware Removal Software 1.2, that automatically clear out cookie files and other offline files. Some of these programs are free.

    Hard Drive Format

    • Some computer owners chose to format their entire hard drive, effectively clearing out all cookie files, viruses and any other file that was not on the computer at the time of original operating system installation.
