Digital Visual Interface (also sometimes referred to as Digital Video Interface), or DVI, is an asymmetrical video input that can be identified by a row of 24 pins on one side and a square matrix of four pins on the other.

  1. What is DVI?

    • DVI is a type of high-definition video input that is available on some high-definition televisions (HDTVs) and many computer monitors. The primary use of a DVI input on an HDTV is to use the HDTV as a display device for a laptop or desktop computer.

    What does DVI transmit?

    • DVI can transmit a visual image with a resolution of up to 2,098X1,311, although current HDTVs are only able to display an image with a resolution of 1920X1080. DVI does not transmit audio, only video.

What if my HDTV lacks a DVI input?

    • Not all HDTVs have a designated DVI input, but nearly all have an HDMI input. DVI can easily be transmitted to an HDMI signal with the use of a DVI to HDMI cable. The DVI end of the cable connects to the DVI compatible device. The HDMI end of the cable connects to the HDTV.
