Job Description for a Senior Systems Engineer
Systems are everywhere, from complex machinery to an essential, custom computer program. These systems sometimes become broken or faulty, or simply need to be created from scratch. This is where the senior systems engineer comes in.
-
Function
-
Senior systems engineers are masters with repairing and creating systems, and therefore are called in on the toughest or most complex assignments. They first meet with clients to identify the problem with a current system or about a function the client would like a system to accomplish. Then, after creating and evaluating model systems, the senior systems engineer builds, launches and tests a new system to perform the function without fault.
Education and Experience
-
A four-year bachelor's degree in systems or industrial engineering is enough to provide a foundation for becoming a senior systems engineer. Higher education hones skills and makes an individual more attractive to employers. The top senior systems engineers have between 10 and 20 years of experience.
-
Salary
-
According to PayScale, the average salary of a full-time senior systems engineer falls between $72,768 and $106,867 annually as of August 2010. This is mainly dependent on education and experience. Government contractors tend to earn slightly more than others, which include IT consulting and health care companies.
