What Is Microsoft Network?

What Is Microsoft Network? thumbnail
Microsoft Network (MSN) is Microsoft's Web portal.

Microsoft Network originated as almost an afterthought to Windows 95. Since its humble beginnings, MSN has soared in popularity and now stands alongside other major Internet portals, such as AOL.com, Netscape.com and Yahoo.com, in terms of membership.

  1. MSNBC Integration

    • MSN received a huge boon when Microsoft partnered with television network giant NBC for a news network called MSNBC. MSNBC provides the latest news updates for MSN.

    Hotmail Integration

    • Partnering with Hotmail gave MSN millions of new members instantly. Although Microsoft has since thrown its weight behind Windows Live Mail, Hotmail is still integrated into MSN.com.

    MSN Messenger

    • MSN Messenger was Microsoft's answer to instant messaging, and for a time the program was tightly integrated with MSN.com. Although the messenger client itself has morphed into Windows Live Messenger, the service is still very much integrated with MSN.com.

    Other Offerings

    • MSN offers dozens of services, including most notably a My MSN personalized home page, local weather and MSN Money.

    Disambiguation

    • Microsoft hasn't exactly made it simple to keep track of MSN. Also available are the Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) and Microsoft's .NET service, neither of which have anything whatsoever to do with MSN.
