VoIP Protocol Testing

Run tests to enhance VoIP capability.

There is a wide range of software available to test Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) connections. It is not necessary to buy testing software, however. There are suitable applications available for free.

  1. Ping

    • Any computer running Microsoft Windows comes complete with "ping." This simple program reports on data loss and round trip speed. From this, calculations for "Packet Loss," "Latency" (round trip speed) and "Jitter" (packet transmission irregularity) are made.

    Testing Sites

    • There are a number of sites with bandwidth testers. Both the Vonage website and Bandwidth.com are examples of these. By using these free sites, "Throughput" can be tested. VoIP Calculator is another useful site for estimating VoIP capacity.

    Commercial Testing Software

    • There are many VoIP testing packages available. VoIP-info.org has an extensive list of these.
