Unlawful Use of a Dumpster
Some people may assume that dumpsters don't have a lot of laws attached to them, however laws are in place in regards to how a dumpster may be used and when it may be used. Being aware of dumpster laws can help keep your criminal record clean.

Owners' Rights
-
Privately owned or rented dumpsters are off limits. In some cities, such as Grass Valley, California, it is illegal to enter, or use, a dumpster for any reason unless you first receive permission from the owner or renter of the dumpster. However, this law doesn't apply if the dumpster has been marked for public use.
Renting Rights
-
Dumpsters may only be rented in Sultan, Washington, for a limited time. Many places have laws regulating how long you can rent a dumpster. For example, residents of Sultan, Washington, may rent a dumpster for private use, however they can only use it for 14 days in a row. It is illegal to use after the 14th day and the dumpster can be removed from the renter's private residence without any form of notification.

Dumpster Diving
-
Dumpster diving is legal in some circumstances. Different states have different laws regarding dumpster diving, or the act of taking items out of a dumpster by either reaching in, or physically getting inside. In general, it is illegal to enter private property in order to get inside a dumpster, nor can you break the lock of a sealed dumpster. However, if an unlocked dumpster is on public land and the dumpster itself is for public use, most states will allow dumpster diving.
