Different states have different laws regarding dumpster diving, or the act of taking items out of a dumpster by either reaching in, or physically getting inside. In general, it is illegal to enter private property in order to get inside a dumpster, nor can you break the lock of a sealed dumpster. However, if an unlocked dumpster is on public land and the dumpster itself is for public use, most states will allow dumpster diving.
