What Is an SR22 in Illinois?
The state of Illinois may require drivers to obtain an SR-22 insurance certificate or financial responsibility insurance. This is the method used by the state to monitor the insurance of drivers who have had license revocations, DUI conviction, or three or more convictions for insurance violations.

According to Cyberdrive Illinois.com, the SR-22 is a certificate of insurance that must be filed by the office of an insurance company directly with the Secretary of State. SR-22 certificates are issued in three different forms. Drivers who obtain an operator's certificate are covered by insurance in any vehicle that they do not own. Drivers who obtain an owner's certificate have insurance coverage on all vehicles owned by the driver. Owner/operator certificates provides coverage for all vehicles operated by the driver, owned and non-owned.
Limits of Liability
-
SR-22 policies must meet at least the minimum standard set forth by the state of Illinois. Coverage amounts, as of August 2010, must be issued for at least $20,000 for one person injured or killed, $40,000 for two people injured or killed and $15,000 for personal property damage.

Renewal
-
Drivers may avoid future insurance-related suspensions by renewing the SR-22 certificate at least 45 days in advance. Insurance agencies who do not receive a renewal within 15 days prior to the expiration of insurance, must notify the Secretary of State's office, which will begin the suspension process.
