Job Hunting in America
Depending on factors like geography and the economy, job hunting can be incredibly frustrating for the unemployed as well as those looking to switch to a new job. However, there are common practices that a job hunter can partake in that better increases the chances of finding employment.
-
Résumé and Experience Building
-
A person's résumé lists a prospective employee's qualifications and experience. The more experience that appears on a résumé, the better it looks to an employer. Thus, resorting to part-time work, freelance work and even internships can add experience to your résumé.
Internet
-
The Internet is a vast resource with many job posting websites online. For example, websites like Monster and Career Builder not only provide job postings but allow job searchers to post their résumés for employers to seek out.
-
Social Networking
-
Social networking websites can get job hunters connected with the right people to eventually find employment. Outside of broad social networking sites like Facebook, there are also sites like LinkedIn, which allows professionals to connect with one another and potentially contact someone who can provide employment.
Self-Promotion
-
Building résumés and social networking are elements of self-promotion, but there are other measures to take to better promote yourself. For example, creating a website featuring a résumé as well as portfolio and sample work (if applicable) can effectively show off one's abilities.
