Mozilla is the open source descendant of Netscape.

Mozilla Firefox is a popular web browser, and Mozilla's SeaMonkey suite includes a web browser like Firefox as well as some other features. SeaMonkey is the open source version of Netscape Communicator, and Firefox is the descendant of Netscape Navigator.

  1. Integrated Mail Client

    • Mozilla's SeaMonkey software includes an integrated email client like Netscape Communicator did. Firefox is only a web browser like Netscape Navigator was.

    Built-In HTML Editor

    • Mozilla's SeaMonkey has a built-in HTML editor called Composer, just like Netscape Communicator did. The benefit is that you can build web pages in Composer and then test them in the browser all within the same program.

    Other Built-In Software

    • SeaMonkey also includes a built-in IRC client and developer tools. Just about all of the extra software that SeaMonkey includes can be replaced by add-ons or Mozilla's Thunderbird email client.

    Smaller Developer Pool

    • Mozilla Firefox is the flagship product of the Mozilla Corporation, and by far most of the company's resources are devoted to Firefox. SeaMonkey has nowhere near the amount of developers contributing to it.

    Less Market Share

    • As of August 2010, Firefox has about 23 percent of the market for web browsers, according to CNET, where SeaMonkey has less than 1 percent.
