What Is the BitTorrent Protocol?

BitTorrent is a file sharing protocol. A protocol in this context is a way of doing things via software that various software programs follow for compatibility purposes. All BitTorrent clients--from uTorrent to Azureus to BitComet--follow the BitTorrent protocol.

  1. BitTorrent Protocol File Sharing Technique

    • BitTorrent shares files by connecting users, called "peers," directly to each other to send and receive small sections of files. Centralized servers, called "trackers," manage this activity.

    Advantage of BitTorrent Protocol

    • BitTorrent is a highly efficient file transfer system. Since peers transmit files to each other and the tracker only coordinates this action, BitTorrent file sharing requires less bandwidth than traditional server-to-user file transfers. Peers generally download and upload at the same time, which also saves on bandwidth.

    Disadvantage of BitTorrent Protocol

    • BitTorrent file transfer speed is dependent on the popularity of the file in question. This is useful for popular files, but peers can obtain unpopular files only slowly, sporadically or not at all.
