Sun tanning without sunscreen can lead to health problems.

Para-amino benzoic acid, or PABA, is an ingredient often found in sunscreen or suntan lotion. PABA is used by sunscreen manufacturers because it absorbs some UV rays and therefore provides UV ray protection to the skin. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Skin Sensitivity

    • PABA has been found to cause skin irritations and negative reactions in certain individuals. Those with skin allergies and sensitivities are unable to use products that contain PABA because it will cause an adverse skin reaction. Many companies now offer PABA-free suntan lotions and products for those with skin sensitivities.

    PABA is a UVB Absorber

    • PABA only absorbs UVB rays and not UVA rays. Both UVB and UVA rays are sun rays that are damaging to skin cells. Some suntan lotions are PABA free because the suntan lotion contains a different ingredient that blocks or absorbs both types of damaging UV rays.

    PABA Stains Clothing

    • Suntan lotions and many brands of sunscreen are PABA free due to the effect PABA has on the clothing with which it comes into contact. PABA stains clothing and other materials. Suntan lotions are often made with different ingredients that do not stain clothing.
