Why Is My Dog Licking the Floor & Rugs?

If your dog exhibits excessive licking behavior, an underlying medical condition could be to blame.

Many dogs have a tendency to lick, the causes can range from simple to complex. It is important to note when and where the dog begins licking, and share this information with the veterinarian.

Stress disorders

According to TheDailyPuppy.com, many dogs are naturally anxious or even stressed. The temperament can vary by breed and environment. Therefore, dogs who lick the floor, rugs, and/or carpet can use this as a way of relieving any anxiety or stress they might be feeling.

Boredom and loneliness have also been linked to excessive licking.

Stomach conditions

Veterans often speculate licking objects is a sign of a chronic gastrointestinal distress. This can range from cancer to worms. Licking is believed to be a sign of nausea and attempt to relieve pain.

Other conditions

The dog may also use licking objects as a form of attention. In the past if your dog has received attention for this behavior then he may resort to those same actions.

There may be a problem with the dogs' teeth or gums, the licking could be an attempt to alleviate any discomfort.
