Knowing your computer's RAM type is important for upgrades.

The Compaq Presario 6000 series has a couple of different memory specifications, depending on the exact model. Between the three different models available, two of them use the same type of memory while the PC133 has different specifications.

  1. Athelon and Pentium 4 Processors

    • Two of the Presario 6000 models, the ones with Athelon and Intel Pentium 4 processors, cant take either DDR PC2700 or DDR PC3200 memory. They can both carry up to 2GB but come standard with either 128, 256 or 512 MB of memory.

    PC133

    • Unlike the other two models, the PC133 can only hold up to 768MB and has three memory slots instead of two. This model uses PC133 SDRAM and can hold up to 256MB per memory slot.

    Considerations

    • Using the wrong type of memory in your computer will cause your PC not to recognize the RAM and your computer likely won't work at all until the correct type is installed. When replacing RAM, don't throw your old RAM away until you're positive the upgrade worked, this way you can always revert to the old configuration of something went wrong.
