Elk Hunting on the Wyoming Range
Wyoming is world famous for its big game, and one of the most sought-after species by wildlife watchers and hunters alike is the Rocky Mountain elk. The remote and scenic Wyoming Range in northwestern Wyoming is a premier elk-hunting destination.

Location
-
The Wyoming Range is a rugged, wild uplift in the southern tract of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, a mosaic of Rocky Mountain wilderness with Yellowstone National Park at its heart. Not least because of its proximity to the famous Tetons, the Wyoming Range is comparatively lightly visited, despite 11,000-foot-plus peaks, rich forests of conifer and aspen, and sagebrush foothills.
Elk
-
Rocky Mountain elk are plentiful in the Wyoming Range. As elsewhere, they typically migrate between summer pasture in the high country and winter at lower altitudes. September is the time of the rut, when bulls gather and defend harems of cows.
-
Challenges
-
As in other areas of the Rockies, hunters must be prepared for the steepness and ruggedness of the Wyoming Range. The high elevation must also be considered in advance: hiking this rough country is made more difficult because of altitudinal shortness of breath.
Regulations
-
Elk hunters in the Wyoming Range must comply with the harvest regulations set forth by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.
