Civil warrants are also known as bench warrants.

A bench warrant---made "from the bench"---can be civil or criminal. A civil bench warrant is frequently referred to simply as a civil warrant.

  1. Warrant

    • A warrant is a writ that directs someone, such as a judge or a police officer, to take action. Common reasons for issuing warrants include making an arrest, searching a location or seizing property.

    Bench Warrant

    • A bench warrant is issued by a judge from the bench, as opposed to a general warrant, which is issued by a justice of the peace. A bench warrant is often used for the attachment of property or to arrest someone. Bench warrants are often used when someone is in contempt of court or when a witness does not obey a subpoena.

    Significance

    • Once a judge issues a bench warrant, the police can treat it like any other warrant.
