Job Description for a Hot Line Operator
A hot line operator offers counseling via the phone to troubled callers. Hot line operators assist those who are victims of violence, struggling with depression, having financial issues or experiencing a wide variety of other situations.
-
Basics
-
Hot line operators must be compassionate and sincerely interested in helping those who call. Since hot lines are available all day, 365 days per year, operators can work odd hours, including evening and overnight shifts, weekends and holidays. Most are instructed to listen to the caller first, then provide the caller with comfort.
Qualifications
-
Hot line operators typically need no more than a high school diploma, along with some on-the-job training, to get hired. Some are students who are studying psychology, while others are everyday citizens looking to help others.
-
Prospects
-
While jobs for telephone operators are expected to decrease by 10 percent through 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, opportunities should remain favorable because of job turnover.
