Definition of Lean Methodology

Lean methodology was introduced by Kiichiro Toyoda, of the Toyota company, in the 1930s, according to the Lean Enterprise Institute. Toyoda devised a way of simplifying manufacturing processes and called it lean manufacturing. The methodology took off as a popular principle due to its cost and time-saving nature.

  1. Definition

    • According to the Environmental Protection Agency, a lean methodology is the concept of streamlining processes and eliminating waste to keep costs low, while maintaining high quality products or services.

    Features

    • Companies, both large and small, can be lean from the start or transition into a lean organization over time. The Lean Enterprise Institute states that the lean methodology focuses on continuous evaluation and improvement of processes for more effective outcomes. Lean businesses are always looking for ways to do more with less.

    Benefits

    • Lean methodologies are put in place to save companies time and money. By reducing waste, businesses reduce their overhead expenses. Finding simpler manufacturing processes cuts time, so that more can be produced in the same (or less) amount of time.
