Consumer advocates fight for consumer justice.

Consumer advocates work for the rights of the consumer. The objective of consumer advocates is to insure the safety of consumer goods and services at fair prices. Consumer advocates work for different government agencies, community organizations, businesses and consumer protection agencies.

  1. Significance

    • Consumer advocates have represented consumers victimized by abusive and predatory business practices and have lobbied for legislation. They promote a fair and open market place, and protect the rights of consumers, especially those of modest means, according to the National Association of Consumer Advocates website.

    Function

    • Consumer advocates provide direct assistance to consumers in a variety of ways. This includes seminars, hot lines and classes, while other consumer advocates run bureaus and work as lobbyists and troubleshooters. Consumer advocates also conduct safety tests on cars, toys, food and clothes.

    Education

    • Consumer advocates come from many different educational backgrounds such as political science and law. Salaries depend on the type of organization and work required and can range from $30,000 to $90,000. Some consumer advocates specialize in particular fields such as nutrition or housing.
