Speakers use a vibrating membrane, sometimes called a diaphragm, to produce audio when the speaker is stimulated by electrical current. The electrical current is passed to the speaker by means of the audio amplifier.

Speakers can be made from many different materials. Inexpensive speakers are often made from materials such as paper or polypropylene. High-end speakers are made with exotic materials such as Kevlar for increased power handling and sound control.

Speakers are divided into several types. Tweeters are small speakers that are usually less than three inches in diameter and reproduce the highest frequencies of sound near the upper limits of human hearing. Mid-range speakers are usually four to eight inches in diameter and reproduce the middle frequencies such as the human voice or a piano. Speakers larger than eight inches reproduce the lowest frequencies, called bass.
