Algae Oil Extraction Technology

Similar to the interest in generated in algae oil byproducts during the energy crisis of the 1970s, the looming energy crisis due to the exhaustion of fossil fuels coupled with the evolution of algae extraction methods puts algae oil extraction technology back in the spotlight.

  1. History

    • Algae was first cultivated on a mass scale in the 1950s, according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. During this period, U.C. Berkley began developing processes for extracting methane from algae.

    Types

    • Algae oil extraction can be preformed either mechanically or chemically. Mechanical routes include pressing or the use of sound waves to release the oil while chemical methods utilize solvents to chemically extract the oil from algae.

    Benefits

    • Advances in algae oil extraction technology continues to push algae into the forefront of renewable fuel options. As the technology continues to improve, so does the viability of algae oil.
