The Code of Ethics of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers

Founded in 1908, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers is an organization for individuals in the chemical engineering field. AIChE members are expected to "advance the integrity, honor and dignity of the engineering profession" by adhering to the organization's code of ethics.

  1. Honest

    • AIChE's code of ethics stresses honesty and integrity. A chemical engineer who is an AIChE member should let his clients know the potential consequences of her actions on the public. He should take responsibility for his actions, avoid disclosing confidential information and present information truthfully.

    Competent

    • The code of ethics asks an AIChE member to strive for competency in her chosen specialty within chemical engineering. She should dedicate time to furthering her education.

    Respectful

    • According to AIChE's Code of Ethics, a chemical engineer should respect the environment and use her skills to protect it. She should also treat her colleagues respectfully and acknowledge their expertise. She should graciously accept critiques of her work.
