Information for Toll-Free Numbers
Toll-free numbers are telephone numbers that begin with one of several three-digit codes. These numbers allow callers to reach businesses or individuals without accruing charges for the call. The charge for using a toll-free number is paid by the called party instead of the calling party.

Toll-Free Prefixes
-
There are currently four toll-free prefix codes: 800, 888, 877 and 866. Although these are all suitable toll-free codes, they are not interchangeable during dialing. For instance, 1-800-555-6789 is not the same number as 1-888-555-6789.
How Toll-Free Numbers Are Assigned
-
Toll-free numbers are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. A corporation, small business or individual can purchase these numbers and service. Fees for such service include a connection, or initiation fee, as well as a monthly fee for continued service. Many times a contract is necessary for service and requires the user to retain service for a predetermined amount of time.

Where to Get a Toll-Free Number
-
Nearly all long-distance carriers offer toll-free numbers, as well as the several hundred toll-free service providers in the United States. These providers have access to the SMS/800 database, which contains information regarding the status of all toll-free numbers. A complete list can be found on the SMS/800 website (see Resource).
