The country of Turkey has a high population of wild boar and some areas of the country permit hunting year-round.

  1. Boar Population in Turkey

    • Turkey has a lot of dense forest and vegetation, which appeals to these animals. The number of wild boars in Turkey is immense as they breed twice in one year and are not usually hunted for their meat by residents. Many people in Turkey follow Islamic law, which forbids the consumption of boar meat. In order to control the population, certain areas of the country allow wild boar hunting throughout the year.

    Description of the Boar

    • The boar lives in dense forests and can be found in the mud in hot weather. This animal can measure up to 3 feet high and 6 feet long and it can weigh between 160 to 450 pounds. The boar has a long, hairy coat and tusks between 3 and 9 inches.

    Hunting Tips

    • Tourists require a Hunting Tourism Permission Certificate issued to tourist agencies by the Ministry of Forest.The wild boar moves around throughout the day, but is more active in the evening. The animal is low to the ground, but can move quickly. Boars have a keen sense of smell so hunters must not smoke or wear cologne. There are a number of products on the market that can mask scent.
