What Is PBX Experience?

What Is PBX Experience? thumbnail
PBX experience involves using multiple lines.

PBX (private branch exchange) refers to a type of private phone network which consists of one external line to which all internal phones are connected. The operator of the PBX system connects the external line to particular offices in the network by using assigned 3- or 4-digit numbers, called extension numbers.

  1. Operation

    • To obtain PBX experience, you must be familiar with using the appropriate buttons and dialing specific codes--for example, dialing an access code to contact a line outside the enterprise, connecting incoming external calls to inside lines.

    Components

    • According to Unified Communications, PBX usually consists of "telephone trunk (multiple phone) lines that terminate at the PBX; a computer with memory that manages the switching of the calls within the PBX and in and out of it; the network of lines within the PBX; and usually a console or switchboard for a human operator."

    Types of Systems

    • People with PBX experience may have come across widely used systems such as Avaya's Definity series. Other prominent manufacturers of PBX systems include Mitel, Fujitsu, Siemens, Northern Telecom (NORTEL) and Lucent Technologies.
