Define Magnetic Storage

Magnetic storage uses the principles of magnetism to capture and store data. According to PCMag, a magnetic read/write head makes tiny reversals in polarity on a magnetic storage medium to write the data.

Processes

Magnetic storage may involve either analog or digital data. Analog recording replicates audio or video onto waveforms onto the magnetic disk or tape, while digital recording inscribes data in the form of binary "bits."

Devices

Magnetic storage devices include mechanisms such as computer hard disks, cassette tapes, reel-to-reel tapes and other objects that use magnetic heads. These heads read or write the data as the tape or disk surface moves past them.

Benefits

Users of magnetic storage media and devices can re-use the same media by recording over old information with new information. They can also erase the magnetic data completely to create a "new" blank drive or tape for future recording.
