What Is Lacquered Cotton Braid Stranded Wire Used For?

Lacquered cotton braid-stranded wire is a conductor, which means it is designed to conduct electricity, while protecting its surroundings. It comes in single-, double- or even triple-stranded wire.

History

Lacquered cloth stranded wire was one of the first types of mass produced electrical wire. It was used in virtually every type of electrical device from homes to cars to radios from about 1890 to 1930.

Description

The wires in the center were made of differing materials, depending on their final use. These wires were wrapped in cotton and then in a cloth braid. This braid came in several colors, and could be lacquered to further protect the internal wire.

Modern Uses

Today, with so many polymer products available, cotton-covered wires are no longer mass produced. Many hobbyists and antique dealers use them to restore period cars, homes and appliances. They have the look of their old-fashioned counterparts, but are produced with modern wire and insulation inside.

Warning

Whenever working with old electronics, be sure to check all conductive parts carefully. Also, make sure the replacement wire is the proper gauge and has the proper core. Finally, never leave a newly restored electric device unattended. Any older appliance can be a fire hazard.
