Definition of Hybrid Class

Definition of Hybrid Class thumbnail
Hybrid courses have many benefits.

As colleges and universities grow, educators seek alternatives to traditional face-to-face courses. Hybrid courses are one such option.

  1. Definition of Hybrids

    • Hybrid courses combine face-to-face meetings with online-learning activities. People often think an online course duplicates what an instructor teaches in the classroom. Instead, hybrids should integrate the best qualities of both the face-to-face and online activities to create a complete course. Hybrid courses can also be referred to as blended learning.

    Advantages

    • Hybrid courses have many advantages. For example, students complete tasks because of the flexibility of an online class, but can clarify any difficulties in the face-to-face setting. Also, different modes of interaction can take place. Students who enjoy talking in a group setting can discuss and ask questions in the face-to-face class, while shy students might feel more comfortable participating through online discussion boards.

    Disadvantages

    • Students who are uncomfortable with technology may have a rough start, as well as anyone who has poor time-management skills. Also, if access to a computer is limited, it may cause a conflict when turning in assignments.
