A group of health care professionals began Charter Med Incorporated in 1974 with an objective to expand health insurance options for consumers. UnitedHealthcare Corporation came into existence in 1977 as the parent company of Charter Med Incorporated.

In addition to the health plans, the company focuses on providing wellness tools to its plan holders. These tools include health calculators, food journals, meal planners and exercise trackers.
