The History of Wireless Mice

The History of Wireless Mice thumbnail
The wireless mouse was presented to the world in 1984.

The wireless mouse dates back further than many would think: all the way back to 1984 with an infrared mouse. Since that first infrared mouse, wireless technology has come a long way and so has the wireless mouse.

  1. Infrared Technology

    • The first wireless mouse was invented in 1984 by Logitech and it needed to be within beaming distance from the computer in order to work, similar to the technology of a TV remote control.

    Radio Frequency

    • Logitech made a large improvement on its wireless mouse in 1991 with the use of radio frequency instead of infrared technology. The mouse no longer had to be in a direct line from the computer.

    Battery Efficient

    • In 1999, Microsoft launched its first wireless mouse and others soon followed, with more options and better battery efficiency.

    Bluetooth

    • In 2003, Apple released its first wireless mouse, which used Bluetooth technology.
