CRT Projectors Vs. LCD Projectors
Placing a CRT and an LCD projector side by side makes the differences between the two immediately apparent. Apart from the size difference, the two differ in resolution, image quality and service life.
-
CRT Projectors
-
CRT projectors have three cathode ray tubes that project red, green and blue components to form a full image. The projectors are bulky, with the smallest weighing in around 50 pounds. These projectors are best for a fixed installation.
Advantages of the CRT Projector
-
The CRT projector has a long service life, with good brightness for up to 10,000 hours of use. It produces a superior black level compared to the LCD projector. CRT projectors can scan resolutions up to 3,200 x 2,560 pixels.
-
LCD Projectors
-
The liquid crystal display projector forms its image by shining a light through three liquid crystal panels, one each for the red, green and blue components of the image. The panels block or allow light to pass, as needed, on a pixel-by-pixel basis, to mix the colors together and correctly display the full image.
Advantages of the LCD Projector
-
The LCD projector is significantly smaller than the CRT projector, making it a more portable projector. The power consumption to drive the LCD projector's panels and lamp are much lower than that needed by the CRT projector. The bulb in the LCD projector will last 2,000 to 3,000 hours. However, users can install a replacement bulb, which restores the projector to a like-new state.
