Alberta's Automobile Insurance Law
Alberta auto insurance laws require each motorist to carry minimum insurance coverage. This coverage should include liability for bodily injury and property damage, medical payments, death and funeral benefits, and disability payments.

Liability and Medical

Alberta auto insurance law requires a minimum of $200,000 liability insurance per accident for bodily injury and property damage, plus $50,000 for medical payments for each injured person. Property damage can be capped at $10,000 if the liability limit is reached.
Disability Benefits
-
For each person disabled in an auto accident, the minimum required coverage is up to 80 percent of the injured person's wages, capped at $400 per week if the person is employed. This coverage lasts a maximum of 104 weeks. Unemployed people injured in an accident receive a minimum of $135 per week, for a maximum of 26 weeks.

For each person killed in an auto accident, the minimum required funeral benefit is $5,000. There are also minimum required payments to the survivors. Death of the head of the household is $10,000 for the first dependent survivor and an additional 20 percent, or $2,000, for each additional dependent survivor. Death of a spouse or partner is $15,000 for the first survivor, with an additional $4,000 for each other survivor.
