Medical equipment technicians work irregular hours and are often on call.

Medical equipment technicians can obtain certification in three areas of medical equipment repair through the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI). Certification is not mandatory, but it increases a candidate's opportunities for hiring and advancement.

  1. Requirements

    • A medical equipment technician can obtain full certification as a biomedical equipment technician, a certified laboratory equipment specialist or a certified radiology equipment specialist by holding an associate degree in electronics technology with three years of work experience, by having an associate degree from a biomedical program with two years of experience, or with four years of work experience.

    Application

    • Candidates must fill out an application packet before they can test for certification. A completed application, transcripts, military diplomas if applicable, and the required application and testing fees must be mailed to ICC Examinations Professional Testing Corporation by the test date deadline.

    Testing and Renewal

    • The test consists of 150 multiple-choice questions and takes approximately four hours to complete. Applicants who successfully pass the test will receive their scores and a certification package. Technicians must renew their certification yearly for the first year and every three years after that.
