Wi-Fi allows users to access the Internet from "Hot Spots."

Wi-Fi is a trademarked term, owned by the Wi-Fi Alliance. It is the name for wireless networking technology which can provide high-speed Internet and network connections via the use of radio waves.

  1. Definition

    • Wi-Fi is defined by the Wi-Fi Alliance as any WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) products that are "based on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' (IEEE) 802.11 standards." This means that any home network with a Wi-Fi signal or a larger wireless network can be considered to be using a Wi-Fi connection.

    How it Works

    • A Wi-Fi connection works with no physical wired connection between the devices, by using radio frequency (RF) technology. An RF current is supplied to an antenna, which creates an electromagnetic field which is able to transmit through the surrounding area. Devices can pick up a Wi-Fi connection at access points.

    Supporting Devices

    • Devices that can use a Wi-Fi connection include computers, PDAs, mobile phones, video game consoles, televisions and many other consumer electronics.
