DSL (digital subscriber line) is a means of broadband Internet connectivity. DSL uses traditional copper telephone lines to deliver a permanently connected Internet service.

  1. Background

    • A wide variety of communications companies offer inexpensive DSL-based Internet services. The most common form of DSL internet is ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line). Asymmetric DSL downloads information from the Internet faster than it can upload. As the majority of Internet browsing involves downloading information, this is ideal for most users' requirements.

    Alternatives

    • Some suppliers also offer SDSL (symmetric DSL) services. These more expensive services offer uploading at an equally high speed to downloading and are typically used by businesses that need to upload a lot of information via the Internet. Other means of obtaining broadband Internet connectivity include fibre cable connections and satellite broadband.

    Limitations

    • DSL runs over copper wire and is only available to customers near the local telephone exchange. Speeds drop the farther each customer is from the exchange, meaning the fastest advertised speeds are often only available to a limited range of people.
