Large Wood Carving Tools
Wood carving can be accomplished with a small whittling knife, but the increased popularity of large wood-carved projects has given way to large wood carving tools that make carving and refining these projects easier for the modern wood carver.

History
-
Wood carvings can be traced as far back as man. Primitive man accomplished wood carvings with stone knives. In the 1800s, wood carving was primarily accomplished using whittling knives or carving knives made specifically for wood. The introduction of power tools in the 1900s saw the rise of bigger wood carving tools designed to match the ambitious larger carving projects of wood carving aficionados.
Varieties
-
A wide variety of large power tools exist for the serious wood carver. Among them are rotor saw burrs, power drills and chisels, grinders, sanders and chainsaws. Other large woodworking tools include lathes for cutting and turning wood. Power tools are overkill for the casual carver who prefers small wood carving projects, but for wood craftsmen working on large projects, these tools make carving significantly easier and save time and energy.

Projects
-
Wood carving projects that are suited for large woodworking tools include carvings made directly from trees (chainsaw art, for example), as well as carved wooden furniture and statues, such as the traditional cigar store wooden Indian.
